The gale blew over as fast as it came on, and by the time Moire climbed into the loft, the air was again quiet, save for the sea, which, unable to settle down, continued to roar.

Unlike the night before, she stayed dressed and awake, spying down on Da and Innis as they talked the last log on the fire to ash. Donald snored in his chair, the rain having kept him from returning home.

Pray he did not complicate her plans.

Several times while she waited, her head bobbed forward, and had she not hit it on the loft balusters, she probably would have drifted off to deep slumber. She dug her fingernails into her palms, willing the pain to keep her awake. Just when she thought she could take no more, Da stood up with a slow stretch and made his way to his room and bed.

When her father’s snuffle joined Donald’s, Innis rose and walked across the room, out of Moire’s view. She waited a breath for the door hinge to give him away, but only silence met her ear. Taking care not to wake Donald, she descended the loft and looked about the kitchen area.

No Innis.

Lifting the door latch, she slipped out into the night and was immediately greeted by a cold breeze that snatched her breath away. She hugged herself tight. Where had he gone? Nothing but darkness all around. She didn’t dare get a lantern, not if she wanted to remain unseen.

To her luck, the winds moved the clouds out of the moon’s way and silver light flooded from above, letting Moire see what had moments before been black shadows. In the distance, a silhouette floated down the path from the house to the sea, and disappeared, dipping down below the cliff’s horizon. And then the curtain of clouds closed over the moon, and she was in darkness again.

Moire set off at a run, her feet flying over the familiar path of grass and dirt, her breathing rasping in her ears. As she neared the cliff’s edge, or where she thought it was, she slowed, careful not to throw herself off the bluff to her death. She fumbled down the cliff path, only stopping once to stifle a cry with a hand over her mouth after bumping a knee into a rock.

On the beach, she looked left, then right. No sign of Innis anywhere, just outlines of rocks.

He had to have come this way! There was nowhere else to go!

Think.

That first day, he’d come to them from the south, hadn’t he? Yes!

She moved down the beach at a quick pace, keeping the water close to her right.

How far should she wander before turning about? Should she look in the other direction?

Ahead, she caught sight of a shadow moving while others remained still.

Hallelujah!

Tossing off caution, she dashed forward, only to come to a skidding halt as she rounded a large boulder. Innis had stopped and was in the cove before her. She darted back behind the rock, pressing her shoulder blades to the cold hardness, wishing she could meld with it, be swallowed by it.
